From fairy tales and farm visits to sports and idioms, the word horse comes up more often than you might expect. That’s why learning how to say Horse in German is more than just for animal lovers—it’s one of those words that pops up in conversations, children’s stories, even driving license exams. The German word is das Pferd, and yes, it's one of the 1000 most frequently used nouns in German.

The word Pferd is neuter—das Pferd—and pronounced somewhat like pfairt, starting with that classic German pf sound, where the p and f are pronounced together. If you're still getting the hang of German articles, don’t worry—our quick video lesson makes der/die/das finally make sense, especially if you hate grammar.

Pferd refers to the animal itself, but you’ll also hear it in metaphorical and idiomatic expressions. In phrases like “ein totes Pferd reiten” (riding a dead horse—doing something pointless) or “das Pferd von hinten aufzäumen” (putting the cart before the horse), it carries symbolic weight too. And of course, children adore words like Pony (which exists in German too), and fans of fantasy novels or medieval legends will meet many a tapferes Pferd.

There's no true opposite of Pferd, but for contrast, Auto (car) is often used when talking about the shift from horses to modern transport. Also, in chess, the knight is referred to as das Pferd, not something like “Ritter.” So if you’re learning chess terms in German, this one is a must.

The word appears in various compound forms too—Pferdesport (equestrian sports), Pferdestall (horse stable), Pferdekutsche (horse-drawn carriage), and even Pferdestärken (horsepower, abbreviated PS, as in cars).
