Examples in all four cases:

Nominative:
Die Milch ist frisch.
The milk is fresh.

Accusative:
Ich nehme die Milch aus dem Kühlschrank.
I’m taking the milk out of the fridge.

Dative:
Er trinkt Kaffee mit der Milch.
He drinks coffee with milk.

Genitive:
Der Geschmack der Milch ist mild.
The taste of the milk is mild.

You’ll often hear:

  • Milch und Zucker – milk and sugar

  • Milchkaffee – café au lait

  • Sojamilch, Hafermilch, Mandelmilch – soy, oat, almond milk

  • Milchprodukte – dairy products

  • Milchstraße – the Milky Way!

Adjectives: frisch, warm, kalt, fettarm (low-fat), laktosefrei (lactose-free)

Pro tip: In cafés, “mit Milch” is often enough to ask for milk in your coffee — but Kaffee mit Milch is more common than just Milchkaffee in speech.

Beginner dialogue using Milch:

A: Trinkst du deinen Tee mit Milch?
B: Ja, immer. Ohne Milch schmeckt er mir nicht.
A: Do you drink your tea with milk?
B: Yes, always. Without milk, I don’t like it.
