Whether you're solving a puzzle, answering a question, or finding a way out of a tricky situation, you’ll need to know how to say solution in German. It’s one of those words that shows up in school, work, relationships — basically anywhere you’re trying to fix something.

The word is die Lösung. It’s feminine, and the plural is die Lösungen. Not sure when to use die instead of der or das? My gender video lesson will make the patterns clear fast.

Lösung is one of the 1000 most frequently used nouns in German, and it opens the door to a whole family of useful phrases — both literal and abstract.

Examples in all four cases:

Nominative:
Die Lösung war einfacher als gedacht.
The solution was easier than expected.

Accusative:
Ich habe die Lösung endlich gefunden.
I finally found the solution.

Dative:
Mit der Lösung bin ich zufrieden.
I’m satisfied with the solution.

Genitive:
Die Vorteile der Lösung sind deutlich.
The advantages of the solution are clear.

Real-World Tips for Learners

Lösung covers both literal and figurative meanings:

  • the answer to a math problem

  • the resolution to a conflict

  • the outcome of a situation

  • even a product that "solves" a problem

You’ll hear it in phrases like:

  • eine Lösung finden – to find a solution

  • nach einer Lösung suchen – to look for a solution

  • die beste Lösung – the best solution

  • eine einfache/praktische Lösung – a simple/practical solution

  • die Lösung eines Problems – the solution to a problem

There are also abstract or formal uses, like:

  • politische Lösung – political solution

  • friedliche Lösung – peaceful solution

  • chemische Lösung – chemical solution (liquid mixture)

Don’t confuse Lösung with Antwort (“answer” to a question) — Antwort is more about verbal or written replies, while Lösung is about resolving a problem or completing something correctly.

Beginner dialogue using Lösung:

A: Hast du schon die Lösung für die Hausaufgabe?
B: Ja, aber ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob sie richtig ist.
A: Do you have the solution for the homework yet?
B: Yeah, but I’m not sure it’s correct.

Now it’s your turn. Think of your answer and say it aloud using Lösung.

“Was war die letzte Lösung, auf die du stolz warst — und warum?”
What was the last solution you were proud of — and why?

Pause, think, then speak your answer out loud in German.
