One of the most important steps toward fluency is being able to express your thoughts. Whether you're agreeing, disagreeing, or just stating how you feel, you'll want to know how to say opinion in German.

The word is die Meinung. It’s feminine, and the plural is die Meinungen. If you’re still figuring out patterns like die, my gender video lesson will help make it all clearer.

Meinung is one of the 1000 most frequently used nouns in German, and you’ll hear it all the time — in debates, casual chats, news reports, and more.

Examples in all four cases:

Nominative:
Die Meinung der Expertin war eindeutig.
The expert’s opinion was clear.

Accusative:
Ich habe eine andere Meinung.
I have a different opinion.

Dative:
Ich stimme deiner Meinung zu.
I agree with your opinion.

Genitive:
Trotz ihrer Meinung machten sie weiter.
Despite her opinion, they kept going.

Where you’ll hear Meinung:

  • meiner Meinung nach – in my opinion

  • eine eigene Meinung haben – to have your own opinion

  • unterschiedlicher Meinung sein – to disagree

  • die öffentliche Meinung – public opinion

  • freie Meinungsäußerung – freedom of expression

Common verbs: haben (have), sagen (say), teilen (share), bilden (form), ändern (change)
Adjectives: klar, deutlich, persönlich, falsch, ähnlich

Tip: You’ll often hear Meiner Meinung nach… at the beginning of a statement. It’s a great way to confidently voice your view, even at A2 level.

Beginner dialogue using Meinung:

A: Was ist deine Meinung zu dem Film?
B: Ich fand ihn langweilig. Und du?
A: What’s your opinion about the movie?
B: I thought it was boring. And you?

Now it’s your turn. Think of your answer and say it aloud using Meinung.

“Zu welchem Thema hast du eine starke Meinung — und warum?”
On what topic do you have a strong opinion — and why?

Speak your answer out loud. Practicing real expression makes Meinung part of your active vocabulary.
