If you’re climbing up a roof, painting a wall, or just trying to reach the top shelf — you need the word for ladder in German. But be careful! It sounds identical to another very common word — and that leads to one of the most frequent confusions for German learners.
The word is die Leiter — and it’s feminine when it means “ladder.” The plural is die Leitern. For help sorting out gender patterns, my gender video lesson clears things up fast.
Leiter is one of the 1000 most frequently used nouns in German, and it’s a great word for both literal objects and metaphorical thinking.
Examples in all four cases:
Nominative:
Die Leiter steht an der Wand.
The ladder is leaning against the wall.
Accusative:
Ich brauche die Leiter für die Glühbirne.
I need the ladder for the lightbulb.

Real-World Tips for Learners
German learners often mix up die Leiter (ladder) with der Leiter (male manager/supervisor). Both words are spelled the same but differ by gender and meaning.
die Leiter – the ladder
der Leiter – the male head of something (Projektleiter = project manager)
die Leiterin – the female manager/supervisor
So if someone says “Ich spreche mit dem Leiter” — don’t imagine a conversation with a ladder!
Some everyday phrases with Leiter (meaning ladder):
die Leiter hochsteigen – to climb the ladder
eine Leiter benutzen – to use a ladder
von der Leiter fallen – to fall off the ladder
auf der Leiter stehen – to stand on the ladder
You’ll also hear figurative uses:
Karriereleiter – career ladder
soziale Leiter – social ladder
These metaphors work just like in English, but it's important to know that the same German word is doing double duty.
Beginner dialogue using Leiter:
A: Wo ist die Leiter? Ich komme nicht an das Regal.
B: Sie steht in der Garage.
A: Where’s the ladder? I can’t reach the shelf.
B: It’s in the garage.
Now it’s your turn. Think of your answer and say it aloud using Leiter.
“Wann hast du das letzte Mal eine Leiter gebraucht — und warum?”
When was the last time you needed a ladder — and why?
Say your answer out loud in German and make sure to use Leiter.
