Whether you're reading the news, watching a war film, or playing a game, the word ammunition comes up often. Learning how to say ammunition in German gives you the tools to talk about conflict, security, and even metaphorical arguments.

The German word is die Munition. It’s feminine, and the plural is die Munitionen, though the singular is far more common. If you're not sure when to use die, my gender video lesson can help make it clear.

Munition is one of the 1000 most frequently used nouns in German, especially in media, military contexts, and everyday metaphors.

Let’s look at all four cases in use:

Nominative:
Die Munition war fast leer.
The ammunition was almost gone.

Accusative:
Sie brauchen die Munition schnell.
They need the ammunition quickly.

Dative:
Wir helfen der Munitionseinheit.
We’re helping the ammunition unit.

Genitive:
Die Qualität der Munition ist entscheidend.
The quality of the ammunition is crucial.

Munition is used both literally and metaphorically:

  • keine Munition mehr haben – to be out of ammunition

  • frische Munition bekommen – to get fresh ammo

  • Munition für eine Diskussion liefern – to give someone more "ammo" in an argument

  • scharfe / explosive Munition – live / explosive ammunition

  • Munition lagern – to store ammunition

Verbs: benötigen (need), laden (load), transportieren, liefern, lagern
Adjectives: scharf (live), explosiv, alt, gefährlich, begrenzte (limited)

Even if you're not into war topics, Munition shows up in figurative speech and politics — it's one of those surprising crossover words worth knowing.

Beginner dialogue using Munition:

A: Ist das eine echte Waffe?
B: Keine Sorge – sie ist ohne Munition.
A: Is that a real weapon?
B: Don’t worry – it has no ammunition.

Now it’s your turn. Think of your answer and say it aloud using Munition.

“In welchem Film oder Spiel kommt viel Munition vor — und warum?”
In which movie or game does a lot of ammunition appear — and why?

Say it aloud, and make sure Munition is part of your answer — it helps you turn passive vocab into active speaking skill.
